Mark Wallinger

Easter

Curated by Artache

Mark Wallinger, an internationally renowned British artist, has chosen to publicly communicate with Kiefer’s work, by creating an unedited installation, Easter, in the aisle adjacent to the space dedicated to the Towers and by choosing an historical and religious theme capable of comparison with the contents of The Seven Heavenly Palaces.

The work was comprised of sixteen flags hanging down the two sides of the aisle as banners emphasizing the form of the cross found in the centre. Mark Wallinger’s flag is an oxymoron, the fusion of two contradictory terms where the traditional colours of the United Kingdom, blue and red, are substituted with the complementary colours, green and orange, of the Irish tricolour. An “impossible” but highly symbolic flag, where the violently realistic effect conveys powerful emotions associated with the two troubled identities of Northern Ireland. At the same time, the artist chose to exhibit three of the most significant works from his entire production: Angel, The Underworld and Ecce Homo.
The project was conceived and set up by Artache together with the permanent installation, entitled Via Dolorosa, inside the Duomo of Milan.
