Summer Camps 2018

“Molti Mondi: giochi per la creazione di nuovi universi” (“Many Worlds: Games That Create New Universes”)

A project by the artist Roberto Fassone, in collaboration with the Education Department.

Once again, as it does every year, the Pirelli HangarBicocca summer school offers kids from 7 to 12 a one-of-a-kind opportunity to come in contact with contemporary art, plunging them into our big exhibition spaces and letting them work alongside some of Italy’s most talented young artists.

This year’s project has been conceived and developed, in collaboration with the Education Department, by the artist Roberto Fassone (b. 1986 in Asti). He will guide kids through an original, disconcerting “game,” whose rules are a jumping-off point for investigating artistic languages and techniques, and developing their own creative and expressive skills. The activities, led by the Pirelli HangarBicocca Arts Tutors, are inspired by and explore Matt Mullican’s major exhibition “The Feeling of Things,” which fills the Navate and the Cube with hundreds of artworks—sculptures, installations, photos, drawings, and paintings—arranged within a structure that resembles a city, a playing field, or even the virtual reality of a videogame. During the five-day summer school, kids will take part in activities, workshops, and games devised by the Educational Department in collaboration with Roberto Fassone, using media that range from performance to storytelling and books to videos, to reflect on the concept of artwork and creativity.

In addition to the creative activities and workshops, each week will include moments of recreation and outings into Milan, to round out the program at the exhibition space.

About the artist
Roberto Fassone was born in 1986 and lives and works in Florence. Part of his practice is based on the attempt to create works that can be summed up in just a few words. The other part illustrates how to develop this type of work, but is impossible to sum up in just a few words. In recent years he has performed, exhibited, and presented his art in Italy and abroad, at venues such as the Naturhistorisches Museum, Bern; MOCAK, Krakow; Carroll/Fletcher, London; Zkm, Karlsruhe; ZHdK, Zurich, MARS Gallery, Melbourne, MAMbo, Bologna; Mart, Rovereto; Fanta Spazio, Milan.

In the workshops he has led at major instititions such as the ZKM in Karlsruhe and the OGR in Turin, Fassone engages adults, children and teens in hands-on activities and performances that help bring out their creative and expressive potential. In 2016, Fassone developed an application, sibi, which allows adults and kids to generate their own artwork, in accordance with constantly changing restrictions and guidelines.

From 11 June to 6 July 2018, “Molti Mondi: giochi per la creazione di nuovi universi” will be repeated for three one-week sessions, each dedicated to a specific age group.
