On Space Time Foam: a Conversation

A Conversation with Joseph Grima, Bruno Latour, Andrea Lissoni, Molly Nesbit and Tomás Saraceno

On Space Time Foam, the work that the artist Tomás Saraceno has created for HangarBicocca, takes inspiration from a variety of cultural contexts and can be interpreted in a number of different ways. It can be seen as a vision of the possible interrelationships between individuals and society, as a metaphor for the most advanced theories in physics, as a utopian architecture that transforms space, and as an experiment in social psychology.
These and other possible interpretations provide ideas for an open, multidisciplinary conversation between the artist and a number of scholars who have reflected on Saraceno’s work from different theoretical viewpoints. The speakers are Joseph Grima, art historian, curator of the first Istanbul Design Biennial and editor-in-chief of Domus; Bruno Latour, currently considered to be the most important philosopher and anthropologist of science and technology, founder of the multidisciplinary study group SPEAP (Experimental Program in Arts and Science) at the SciencePo Faculty in Paris, and Molly Nesbit, art historian and author of important essays on contemporary culture in modern society.
The meeting is in the form of an open informal conversation, in which the audience can take part with questions and suggestions. Starting out from Saraceno’s work and words, it gives an opportunity to examine how contemporary art can inspire ideas and the imagination, bringing together various areas of knowledge in a non-academic manner and generating new visions for the future.
