Joan Jonas. Reanimation: a documentary by Rima Yamazaki

On Thursday, 6 November 2014 at 8.30 pm, HangarBicocca presents a screening of Joan Jonas. Reanimation, a documentary directed by Rima Yamazaki (2012, 72 minutes, sound, colour, in English without subtitles). Reanimation is one of Joan Jonas’s most spellbinding installations, which rounds off the Light Times Tales exhibition at HangarBicoccaInspired by the novel Under the Glacier by the Nobel laureate in Literature Halldór Laxness, the work conveys a powerful sense of nature and of landscape. Music and sound play a dominant role in a variety of media that include drawing, video, sculpture and texts.
The documentary follows the artist during the creation of the work at dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012 and its translation – with the collaboration of musician Jason Moran –in a performance that has been shown at leading institutions including Tate Modern in London, HangarBicocca itself and the Louvre in Paris. The film gives an inside view of Joan Jonas’s creative process and of her ability to take inspiration from concepts that may be visual, spatial or narrative. In the film, the artist, whom we see at work in her studio and elsewhere, gives a first-person account of the genesis of some of her most important historical works, including WindOrganic HoneyVolcano Sagaand The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things.
